What is Lumi?
Lumi is an automatic document scanner for iPhone. Open the app and the camera comes up immediately — point it at any page, ID, receipt, or contract and Lumi detects the edges, holds steady, dewarps the perspective, and saves a clean scan to your library. There's no shutter button to press. There's also no cloud — every scan lives on your iPhone.
How do I make my first scan?
Open the app. Grant the camera permission when iOS asks. Hold the iPhone above a document so the page fills most of the frame. When the green corner markers lock onto the page, hold still for half a second — Lumi will auto-capture, save the result to History, and continue listening for the next document.
Where are my scans saved?
Tap the clock icon in the top-left corner to open History. Scans are grouped by date (Today, Yesterday, This Week, This Month, Older). Tap any scan to see the full image, share it, rename it, or delete it.
Why does the App open straight to the camera?
Lumi is designed for speed. Most document-scanning sessions are quick captures during everyday life — a receipt at lunch, a contract, a piece of homework. Opening to the camera means you can scan in under two seconds.
Scanning tips
What kind of document works best?
Anything roughly rectangular with visible edges against a contrasting background. White paper on a dark desk is ideal. Documents with extreme glare, very faint margins, or heavy folds may take a few tries.
My document isn't being detected.
A few things to try:
- Make sure all four corners of the page are inside the camera frame
- Lift the phone higher — the document should fill most of the frame but not all of it
- Add more light. Lumi works best in well-lit rooms or daylight
- Place the document on a darker surface so the edges contrast clearly
- Avoid sharp angles — tilt the iPhone roughly parallel to the page
- If auto-detection just won't lock on, tap the shutter button at the bottom center to capture manually
Can I import a photo I already have?
Yes. Tap the photos icon at the bottom-left of the camera screen. Apple's secure picker opens, you pick one or more images, and Lumi imports them. Each imported image is auto-dewarped if Lumi can detect a document inside it, and saved into your library just like a camera scan. The picker doesn't ask for full Photos library access — Lumi only sees the exact images you tap.
What's the difference between auto-capture and the manual shutter?
Auto-capture is the default: hold the phone steady over a document, and Lumi grabs the moment the edges lock. The manual shutter is a fallback — if lighting or contrast is rough, tap the white button at the bottom center to take the current frame regardless of whether Lumi has detected the edges.
Lumi auto-captures too fast / too slow.
Lumi waits for the document to be stable for about half a second before capturing. If it triggers when you didn't want it to, lift the phone away and pull it back over the next page. If it never triggers, the edges probably aren't being detected — try the lighting and framing tips above.
Can I scan more than one page in a row?
Yes. After Lumi captures one page, it returns to scanning mode immediately. Move to the next page and hold steady, and Lumi will capture again. Each page is saved as its own scan in History; Premium users will be able to combine pages into a single multi-page document.
Can I scan IDs and cards?
Yes. Anything rectangular detects well — IDs, business cards, receipts, contracts, handwritten notes, book pages. For IDs and cards, scan both sides separately. Please only scan documents you have the legal right to copy.
Subscriptions and free tier
How does the free tier work?
Every new install gets 3 free scans for life. These let you try Lumi out on real documents before deciding whether to subscribe. After your third scan, the app will show the Premium upgrade screen the next time you try to scan.
Do free scans reset?
No. The 3 scans are a one-time, lifetime allowance — they do not refill daily, weekly, or after deleting scans from your History. We chose this model because Lumi's value is in scanning often, not occasionally, and a hard cap keeps the App free of ads, telemetry, and tracking.
What does Premium unlock?
- Unlimited scans
- OCR — extract text from any scan, on-device
- PDF export (single-page and multi-page)
- Multi-page documents in a single session
How much does Premium cost?
- Weekly Premium — $9.99 per week. No free trial. Best for short-term needs.
- Yearly Premium — $39.99 per year with a 3-day free trial for new subscribers. Best long-term value.
Prices are displayed in your local currency at the time of purchase based on Apple's price tiers.
How does the 3-day free trial work?
If you choose the Yearly plan as a new subscriber, Apple gives you 3 days of full Premium access at no cost. You can cancel any time during those 3 days (in iOS Settings → Subscriptions) and you won't be charged. If you don't cancel, the yearly subscription begins automatically at the end of the trial.
How do I cancel my subscription?
iOS Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions → Lumi → Cancel Subscription. Your Premium access continues until the end of your current billing period. We can't cancel subscriptions for you — Apple manages this directly.
I subscribed but Premium isn't showing up.
Open Settings inside the app and tap Restore Purchases. This re-syncs your subscription from Apple. If Premium still doesn't appear after a minute, email us with the date and approximate time of purchase.
How do I get a refund?
All purchases are processed by Apple, so refund requests must be submitted directly to Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We don't have the ability to issue refunds ourselves.
Can I switch from Weekly to Yearly (or vice versa)?
Yes — you can switch plans at any time from iOS Settings → Subscriptions → Lumi. Apple handles the proration automatically.
Privacy and data
Where do my scans go?
Onto your iPhone, and nowhere else. Lumi has no servers that hold your content. Every scan lives in the App's private sandbox on your device, in iOS's standard Application Support directory. We never upload, copy, or analyze your scans. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
Does Lumi use any AI service?
No external AI service. Edge detection runs locally via Apple's Vision framework, perspective correction runs locally via Core Image, and OCR runs locally via Apple's VNRecognizeTextRequest. Nothing about your scans ever leaves your device.
What about backups?
If you have iCloud Backup enabled in iOS Settings, iOS may include Lumi's sandbox (and therefore your scans) in your standard iPhone backup. That backup is encrypted by Apple and accessible only to you via your Apple ID. We have no access to it.
How do I delete all my data?
Uninstall the App. iOS will remove the entire sandbox, including every scan, OCR text, PDF, and preference. This action is irreversible. If you also want any subscription metadata removed from RevenueCat, email [email protected] with the subject "Lumi — Data Deletion Request".
What permissions does Lumi need?
- Camera: required, to detect documents from the live feed. Lumi never records video.
- Network: only for App Store subscription validation via Apple and RevenueCat. No content of your scans is sent over the network.
Lumi does not request photo library access — it has no need to read or write your Photos library. You can still share a scan to Photos manually via the iOS share sheet, in which case iOS will ask for permission only at the moment of saving.
OCR and exporting
How accurate is OCR?
OCR uses Apple's on-device Vision framework, which is generally very accurate on clean printed text in supported languages, less accurate on handwriting, decorative fonts, and low-quality scans. Better lighting and a flatter document at scan time produces noticeably better OCR results later.
How do I export as PDF?
Open any scan from History. Tap the menu in the top-right (•••) and choose Share as PDF. Multi-page scans become a single multi-page PDF.
How do I export as images?
Same menu, choose Share as Images. Each page is shared as a separate JPEG.
Troubleshooting
The app opens to a black screen.
This usually means camera permission has been denied. Check iOS Settings → Lumi → Camera, and make sure access is allowed. Then reopen the App.
"Camera access needed" screen keeps appearing.
Tap the button on that screen — it opens iOS Settings to the right page. Toggle Camera on, then return to Lumi.
The captured image is blurry.
Hold the phone steady for a moment longer before the auto-capture fires. If your hand shakes, rest your elbows on a table or hold the phone with both hands. Good lighting also helps the camera focus more crisply.
The captured document is rotated or upside down.
Re-scan with the iPhone held in the same orientation as the page (top of the document near the top of the screen). Lumi corrects perspective but does not currently flip documents end-over-end.
Auto-capture won't stop.
If Lumi keeps capturing while you put it down or move it around, lift it away from any rectangular surface or close the App until you're ready to scan again. Lumi has a short cooldown between captures to prevent this from being too aggressive, but a rectangular tabletop nearby can still trigger captures.
App crashed.
Please email us with your iOS version, your iPhone model, and a description of what you were doing when the crash occurred. The more detail, the faster we can fix it.
